Dad’s Podcast

Real Dads. Real Talk.

George Dutra & Gabriel “Gabe” Smith sit down every Tuesday night in Richmond, Virginia for honest conversation about fatherhood — the wins, the failures, breaking the cycle, and showing up for your kids. No experts reading scripts. Just dads talking.

The Show

Two dads. One table at Curry's.

The Rogue Dad's Podcast started as one dad's journal — a way to be there for his daughter in the moments he might miss. Now it's a weekly table where dads talk straight about raising kids, men's mental health, and doing it differently than it was done to them.

George

Co-host

George came to fatherhood later in life. His daughter Rogue is nine, and she's the reason this show exists — every episode is a conversation he wants her to be able to hear someday.

By day he's a meat cutter in Chesterfield and the founder of Body Buddz, the family business that sponsors the show. On Tuesdays, he's at the table.

Gabe

Co-host

Gabe's kids are grown — 25 to 36 — so he's the voice at the table who's already been where younger dads are standing, and isn't afraid to say what he'd do over.

He owns Curry's Caribbean Restaurant & Bar, where the show records on Tuesday nights when the restaurant is closed and the conversation can stay real.

♥ Cause of the Month — November 2026 · Spotlight

Fatherhood Foundation of Virginia — Chris Beach's “Fathers with Fuzz” M4K team

Each month the show spotlights one local cause, and supporting the show also supports that cause alongside the podcast itself. For November 2026 that's the Fatherhood Foundation of Virginia, through Chris Beach's Mustaches for Kids team — growing mustaches all month to fund fatherhood programs across Virginia. Your support backs this podcast and the fathers and causes we choose to spotlight — the dads we feature, the GoFundMes we share, and work like this. A new cause gets picked each month.

Dads Helping Dads

Spotlight: local dads who need a hand

This show exists so dads don't carry hard seasons alone. These are real, live fundraisers for fathers in the Richmond area right now — plus the local organizations doing fatherhood work every week. Give if you can. Share either way. When you support the show itself, you're also backing the fathers and causes we choose to spotlight here — like the dads above and their GoFundMes. And if you give to a dad's GoFundMe directly, every dollar goes straight to him. The show takes no cut of that, ever.

Richmond · Dad of Two

RJ Coffey

Richmond knows RJ — from Poes Pub and Shenanigans, the ballfield as an assistant coach, and helping his boys Eli and Asher build Pinewood Derby cars. He's been out of work since December 2025 and is now fighting stage 4 colorectal cancer, through chemo, radiation, and major surgery ahead.

The need: living expenses so he can focus on fighting and getting back to watching his kids grow up.

Richmond · Dad of Four

David Futrell

David and his wife Karen packed up their home in San Antonio and moved to Richmond to be near family after his stage 3 laryngeal cancer diagnosis. A father of four and grandfather of six, he worked from age 14 into his seventies — the provider his family never had to worry about. He has completed treatment and is rebuilding his strength at home.

The need: growing medical bills, and a car of their own so he can get to appointments without relying on family for every ride.

Richmond · Dad of Two Daughters

Emmanuel “Jhoon” Spake

For over 30 years Jhoon has served this community through the U.S. Postal Service, working the San Francisco and Richmond plants — a husband and father of two daughters who has always shown up for everybody else. In September he was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic colon cancer.

The need: over $52,000 for three weeks of treatment at the center his family chose, alongside chemo.

Fatherhood Foundation of Virginia

Right here in Richmond — programs like 24/7 Dad, InsideOut Dad, and New Dad 101 that teach men to be active fathers and engaged partners. Their FATHER Christmas program has honored 260+ dads, given Christmas to 500+ kids, and put over $90,000 directly in deserving fathers' hands. Know a dad who deserves it? Nominate him. Can you sponsor one? This year's goal is 25 Richmond-area dads at $500 each.

Chris Beach's “Fathers with Fuzz” — M4K Richmond

Chris Beach — who leads the Fatherhood Foundation of Virginia and sits at our table Tue Nov 10 — turned his 49th birthday on November 1 into a fundraiser. His Mustaches for Kids team, Fathers with Fuzz, is growing mustaches all November to fund fatherhood programs across Virginia. His goal: $2,649.

REAL LIFE — Richmond

Founded in 2016 by Dr. Sarah Scarbrough (at our table Tue Dec 8), REAL LIFE runs 11 recovery houses in Richmond and builds pathways for people coming home from incarceration — many of them dads rebuilding a life with their kids. Employment, housing, and a real second chance.

Support the Show

Keep the mics on

Supporting the show helps George & Gabe reach other dads — the ones carrying hard seasons quietly who need to hear they're not the only ones — and it keeps the lights on: the recording, the clips, the table at Curry's every Tuesday. It also backs the fathers and causes we choose to spotlight — the dads in Dads Helping Dads, their GoFundMes, and the local work we highlight each month, like the cause of the month above. This show is independent, just two dads and no network, and the honest goal is to grow it until it can be a full-time job. We're not there yet. Your support is how it gets there.

Chip in — any amount

Pick an amount and hit the button. It opens an email to the show (roguerva@gmail.com) with your chip-in ready to send — the show replies with its secure Ko-fi donation link so your support lands in the right place, under the show's own account. When you chip in, you're supporting this podcast and the fathers and causes we choose to spotlight — including this month's cause above.

Thanks for chipping in! Your email app should open with the chip-in ready to send to roguerva@gmail.com — just hit send there, and the show will reply with its Ko-fi donation link.

No email app on this device? You can write to the show directly at roguerva@gmail.com and say you'd like to chip in.

Get Involved

Pull up a chair

Nominate somebody for the weekly shout-out, pitch yourself as a guest, float a guest idea, or send us a dad who needs the spotlight. Every form below goes straight to the show at roguerva@gmail.com.

Weekly Shout-Out

Nominate a Dad of the Week

Every week at the table, George & Gabe name a Dad of the Week — and parents, grandparents, coaches, and mentors count too. Somebody who showed up for their kids in a way people should hear about: the hard shift then the school play, the custody fight they didn't quit, the dad quietly doing it different than it was done to him. Nominate yours and the show may read their name on the next episode.

Your email app should open with the nomination ready to send to roguerva@gmail.com. Just hit send there.

Be a guest — or pitch a guest idea

The show books Richmond-area guests who work with kids and families — psychologists, physicians, group-home workers, coaches, teachers, authors, and dads with a story. Pitching yourself, or suggesting somebody else? Either way, use this form. Richmond-area guests come to Curry's in person: Tuesdays at 6 PM, after the workday, because most guests are working parents too. Tuesdays are booked a few weeks out, which gives every guest time to prepare.

Your email app should open with the pitch ready to send to roguerva@gmail.com. Just hit send there.

Nominate a dad for the spotlight

Know a Richmond-area dad in a hard season — a fundraiser running, a family carrying too much, a story other dads need to hear? Send him our way and the show will look at featuring him in Dads Helping Dads.
